<p>Guests at this glossy hotel flop into the large squishy chairs in Goldie&#8217;s Lounge for festive afternoon tea, tucking into finger sandwiches of turkey and cranberry and loading up scones with jam and clotted cream. As for booze, you can take your pick, from quaffing down Carden Estate Reserve using grapes from the hotel&#8217;s very own vineyard, to a balloon glass of G&amp;T, mulled wine or a bubbling glass of Bolly. <p>Squirrelled away between the Walled Kitchen Gardens and the Stableyard, the cottage of the estate&#8217;s former gardener has been transformed into an alluring little pit-stop to grab lunch. But it also puts on a damn tasty festive afternoon tea with egg nogg muffins and just-baked Baileys chocolate scones, served warm and smeared with a dollop of orange marmalade being the unequivocal highlight. <p>For bragging rights, nab a table here for the highest festive afternoon tea in Manchester. As you gawp at the city below you and the gathering clouds, towers of festive-inspired cakes and sandwiches will be delivered to your table, from pristinely made turkey and cranberry to blinis topped with smoked salmon and caviar. Round off with black forest yule log, cranberry cheesecake and<em> </em>Maple and pecan choux. <p>Everything about this new offshoot, opposite Wilmslow rail station, is dapper, from the mixologists in their crisp white shirts to the polished grand piano, played every Sunday to suited and booted diners. And from now until the end of December, the kitchen are dishing up a drool-worthy festive afternoon tea menu of lobster on brioche with lemon and dill mayo, oozy camembert with chestnut and cranberry and maple-glazed pigs in blankets. <p>For a seriously memorable dining experience, head to the Midland that&#8217;s been serving afternoon tea with aplomb since 1903. Originally diners would sit in their gladrags on the roof terrace, sipping tea and munching cakes, but today you&#8217;ll be directed to the cavernous tea room whose huge windows open to killer views of St Peter&#8217;s Square (and the giant twinkly Father Christmas). On the menu are the classics (turkey and cranberry, poached salmon and dill creme fraiche, honey roast gammon and mustard), but it&#8217;s the cakes that are truly standout. From dark chocolate delice with smoked almonds and sea salt, to eggnog panna cotta, all gleefully washed down with Champers and mulled wine. From £35.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re not in the Christmas spirit when you arrive at this grand dame, we promise you will be by the time you&#8217;ve chowed down on its festive afternoon tea. Diners sit in the Palm Court beneath baubles hanging from the chandeliers, where fronds of palms are strung with fairy lights and a pianist tinkers with Christmas tunes. Perfectly cut sarnies arrive to the table filled with roast turkey, topside of beef, and prawn marie rose, whilst desserts of passion fruit pavlova and chocolate, chestnut and cranberry eclairs take care of the sweet stuff. <p>Ever since Champneys pumped a cool £10 million into this 300-year-old estate, the revival of Mottram Hall has been garnering an entire new legion of loyal followers. And it really does have the goods to back it up with a passionate kitchen and beaming army of front-of-house staff. Menus for its festive afternoon tea are distinctly classic and traditional, with finger sandwiches of brie and cranberry, smoked salmon and dill, and pretty little cakes to tuck into (carrot cake, cranberry and clementine, filo mince pie). <p>Over at this historic, centrally-pitched hotel, where top-hatted doormen usher you inside beneath a grand twinkly chandelier, you could go for the traditional smorgasbord of festive-inspired finger sandwiches and artfully crafted cakes. All washed down with Taittinger, of course. Our advice? Go big and plump for the &#8216;Gentlemen&#8217;s&#8217; take on festive afternoon tea &#8211; a decadent spread of great hulking sarnies, brought to you in five-star-style with a side of G&amp;Ts and strawberries and clotted cream.
