<p>Ever since this small neighbourhood joint was unveiled at the beginning of 2024, it&#8217;s been making ripples on the Cheshire foodie scene. Cleverly executed, British seasonal plates make up the small and considered menu from chef Chris Boustead who adds the odd foraged ingredients to his dishes. And the space is laid-back and cool in an industrial, rustic sort of way. Absolutely no chintz or polished aesthetic allowed here thank you very much. For small groups, hunker down in its private room, or if you&#8217;re after something bigger, you can hire out the entire restaurant.</p>

<p>For something truly special, there&#8217;s The Temperance Room in Manchester&#8217;s offshoot of the Hawksmoor. A dark and moody panelled space where up to 14 guests sit around a long oval dining table and dig into platters of just-pink steak, loading up their plates with beef dripping chips and smothering it all in their drool-worthy anchovy hollandaise. Helmed by executive chef Dion Wyn-Jones, the kitchen is seriously going places with an unashamedly British menu that&#8217;s clever, precise and exciting. So if you&#8217;re looking for a grand dame sort of experience with mind-blowing food, gather up your chums and hunker down in The Oak Room. A stately, high-ceilinged corner of the hall where the service will be slick and the food will knock your socks off.</p>

<p>The crew at this Burton Road institution are so blimmin&#8217; lovely, they give you the entire upstairs for your private do with space for up to 40. And if you&#8217;ve never been to Volta, I implore you to stop what you&#8217;re doing right now and book a table. Globally-inspired plates keep locals coming back again and again, from vinegary boquerones to earthy black lentils and pan fried cod in an addictive yellow curry sauce. Oh, and the roast potatoes with aioli are quite possibly some of the best roasties to ever come out of a kitchen. But it&#8217;s the dips that are truly standout: tear up chunks of flatbread and scoop up whipped feta and hazelnut, roasted aubergine and miso or the bright orange butternut squash chersi. Quite possibly the best sort of food, washed down with a few cocktails, when you&#8217;re in a hobnobbing, mingling sort of mood.</p>

<p>For something more intimate, look to this bijou wine bar on Northgate Street. Downstairs, you&#8217;ll find its subterranean private room, a former cellar, that&#8217;s been spruced up and laden with a large table, drooping candles and all the frills. Helmed by chef Luke Richardson, the kitchen dishes up what he describes as ‘Parisian expat food’, from cuttlefish and squid ink, to guinea fowl and borlotti beans. Paired with hard-to-find, quaffable wines and no windows, expect one long, languid afternoon hiding away from the world.</p>

<p>Of course this hip and lively bolthole has an equally whimsical private dining room for a festive feast. Squirrelled away from the main guest areas, this Georgian townhouse hosts huddles of diners in The Tea Room &#8211; an eccentric through-the-rabbit-hole space with an upside down table strung from the ceiling, wonderland-themed chairs and light streaming through the sash windows. There&#8217;s a large round table and you can always head to The Secret Garden for post-dinner drinks, gathering around heat lamps and working your way through its cocktail menu. </p>

<p>A bit of a game changer on Cheshire&#8217;s foodie scene, Next Door is the wildly interesting passion project from head chef Richard Nuttall and his sommelier wife, Vicki Nuttall. At its core is a tangible commitment to local suppliers and seasonality, though they also pioneered &#8216;Back to Basics&#8217; dining without power in 2022, dishing up a nine-course tasting menu without gas or electricity and lighting the restaurant only by candlelight. All in protest to rising energy costs. What we&#8217;re trying to say is that this is a team who really blimmin cares about food and where it comes from and the entire dining experience. If there&#8217;s just a small group of you (up to 12), the team will host you in the lounge, or on the upper level of the dining room (10 guests), serving one of their tasting menus &#8211; which we guarantee will blow you away. </p>

<p>There&#8217;s a whole lotta love for Italians in Cheshire. Especially the sort that are laden with crisp white tablecloths and orchestrated by teams of waiters in ironed shirts and dickie bows. And one of the all-round leaders has got to be San Carlo &#8211; the super luxe small restaurant chain with offshoots in Hale, Manchester&#8217;s city centre and Alderley Edge. It&#8217;s here you&#8217;ll find a dining room, where you can gaze across to the diners (ahem, celeb spot!) in the main restaurant through glass shutters, but you&#8217;ll still feel tucked away with a bunch of your best pals. And for all of its glitterati boasting, there&#8217;s no denying the food is really special.</p>
