WHAT? WHERE?

Set on the fringes of affluent Bowdon, and a short jaunt to Altrincham town centre, Bowdon Prep has long been one of South Manchester’s best-kept prep-school secrets – a small, academically ambitious independent school with a notably warm pastoral reputation. Founded in late 1930s and housed in an elegant Victorian building on Ashley Road, the school of 240 pupils and 20 to a class currently educates girls aged 3–11, although that’s about to change in a big way.

From September 2026, Bowdon Prep will become co-educational and officially join the Repton Family of Schools, linking the school with one of the UK’s most established independent education brands. It’s a significant moment for a school that has traditionally been proudly local and all-girls, and gives it a very modern new positioning: boutique prep-school feel, but with heavyweight backing behind the scenes. Designed to future-proof the school in an increasingly competitive independent sector, it should bring broader opportunities, stronger strategic backing and a higher national profile, while still preserving the small-school atmosphere and pastoral warmth existing families value so highly.

FACILITIES

There’s a whole lot to explore at Bowdon Prep – and it certainly feels like something of a Tardis when you first arrive. Housed in a characterful Victorian building which spills out in all directions, it’s filled with specialist classrooms which include two science labs for hands-on experimentation, music rooms and practice spaces, an ICT suite, a STEM room, a packed library and a cavernous art studio with vast windows – a genuinely inspiring place for creative minds to let loose.

There is also a large sports hall, a separate dance and drama studio, and extensive outdoor provision, including two vast all-weather pitches and playground areas. Plus, they’re on the cusp of redeveloping both their school playgrounds (EYFS for KG and Reception, and main playground for Y1-6).

SPORT

This is not a tiny academic hothouse where sport gets squeezed into Wednesday afternoons. Bowdon Prep takes its extracurriculars seriously.

Facilities include the sports hall, plus two multi-use sports pitches with netball courts, tennis courts, an athletics track and rounders courts, just across the road for the kids to find their feet. The school fields teams in netball, lacrosse, football, tag rugby, cricket, rounders and cross-country, with specialist sports coaches brought in alongside PE staff, and there’s a whole host of sporting clubs to sign up to: yoga, athletics, gymnastics, archery, judo, rounders and more.

And pupils are absolutely bossing it at the moment: Netball is a particular standout, with the school achieving ISA national success four times in the past five years. Lacrosse is another major strength, with the under-11 team competing at national level and regularly performing strongly against other independent schools (and boys’ teams).

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS

A big deal here. If your child likes the spotlight — or simply needs a confidence boost to find it — Bowdon Prep leans hard into the creative arts with specialist music rooms and a purpose-built dance and drama studio, as well as a large hall used for rehearsals and performances. Performance opportunities start early, with even Kindergarten children taking part in harvest assemblies, Christmas shows and the brilliantly named Mini B-Fest, an outdoor mini festival-style event.

As pupils move up the school, productions become increasingly polished and ambitious. Y 1 to 4 perform regularly through concerts, plays and events including the wonderfully eccentric Y3 ‘Waxworks’ showcase, while Y5 and 6 graduate to full-scale theatre productions at venues including The Waterside in Sale and the Garrick Theatre. Recent shows have included Matilda and this year’s Aladdin, alongside a formal Christmas Carol Concert at St Mary’s Church.

Music provision is equally strong, with orchestra, chamber choir, solo performances, LAMDA from Y2 and a long list of clubs all part of school life (Rock Club, Samba Band, Street Dance). All pupils from Kindergarten to Y6 have specialist music lessons each week, as well as drama lessons, whilst around 50% have 1-1 instrumental music lessons.

LITTLIES

Little ones can start from three years in Kindergarten – an incredibly calm, but colourful space within the main site, filled with plenty of natural light. Naturally, teaching is play-based with a focus on early literacy, numeracy, communication and social development, delivered by specialist Early Years staff. And the little ones have plenty of scope to run about and play outside in the outdoor learning areas and the all-weather pitches. Plus there’s a Forest School space, including a pond and growing area, used by Reception and Kindergarten (and all year groups) for outdoor learning. I’m also loving the fact that every child in Kindergarten is paired with a Y6 buddy.

ACADEMICS

Academically, Bowdon Prep is strong without being overly rigid or exam-obsessed, with a clear focus on preparing children for a range of next steps rather than a single pathway. Crucially, it remains proudly non-selective, welcoming a broad range of learners while still delivering consistently impressive outcomes. Around 40% of pupils progress to the area’s highly competitive grammar schools, with a further 40% moving on to independent schools including Manchester High School for Girls, Withington Girls’ School, Cheadle Hulme School, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and Loreto Grammar School — undoubtedly some of the strongest senior school destinations in the region.

The school is keen to point out that while not every family chooses the grammar route, its grammar school success rate is notably high, averaging around 70% over recent years compared to Trafford’s overall average of approximately 26%. This year, 89% of families secured and accepted their first-choice secondary school.

One thing that really stands out is the specialist teaching model in the Prep department. Pupils are taught by subject specialists across maths, English, science, reasoning, humanities, ICT, STEM and art, alongside music, drama, PE and modern foreign languages (languages are introduced early, with children in Kindergarten learning French songs and vocabulary before moving on to specialist-taught French and Spanish lessons from Reception through to Year 6). It gives the school a slightly more senior-school feel academically and is designed to help pupils become independent, organised and confident learners well before they make the transition to secondary school.

PASTORAL CARE

Pastoral care is arguably where Bowdon Prep most clearly defines itself, with wellbeing treated as central to the school’s identity rather than an add-on. The guiding belief is simple: children learn best when they feel happy, safe and understood. That ethos is embedded through a highly structured but very human approach to pupil voice and emotional support, including regular listening sessions, school councils and leadership opportunities from Y6 onwards. A dedicated head of wellbeing oversees initiatives such as ‘rainbow’ listening groups in the library and informal check-ins designed to give pupils space to talk openly and be heard. Alongside this sits access to specialist support, including a trained play therapist and psychotherapist offering both one-to-one and group sessions, with parents actively involved.

A key feature is the school’s PASS system (‘Pupils’ attitudes to Self and School’)— an online questionnaire which has evolved into a normalised part of school routine. It means kids can respond with their concerns and feelings, giving staff more honest insight into their young minds.

SEND

Bowdon Prep takes an inclusive, early-intervention approach to SEND, focusing on identifying needs quickly and putting practical support in place without delay. Provision is led by Deputy Head and SENDCo Mrs Delf, who brings more than 35 years of experience to the role, supported by teaching assistants who work closely with pupils as needed. As a proudly non-selective school, particularly at EYFS entry point, the emphasis is on adaptive teaching and tailored intervention strategies that allow children to access learning confidently alongside their peers.

THE HEAD

Warm, visible and deeply invested in the day-to-day life of the school, the current Head, Sara Makepeace-Taylor, brings a notably personal style of leadership to Bowdon Prep. Having joined as Head of Lower School in 2018, before becoming Acting Head in 2022 and officially taking on the role in 2024, she is now firmly embedded at the heart of the school community and known for being highly approachable and consistently present around the site.

There’s a genuine sense that children are known individually here, underpinned by the school’s motto: Believe, Persevere, Succeed, which she introduced in Sept 2018, reflecting the wider emphasis on resilience and confidence.

And of course, she’s been instrumental in embedding the school’s biggest recent changes, namely the move to co-education and the partnership with Repton. Chatting to her, it’s clear the message from the top is both pragmatic and forward-thinking: evolve carefully, invest back into the school, and preserve the close-knit community that families value most.

QUIRKS

There’s a refreshingly playful, unpretentious side that sits nicely alongside the school’s academic seriousness. One of the most popular traditions is ‘Break the Rules Day’, where pupils pay a small fine to bend school rules for the day – from wearing their PJs and bringing in treats to eating pud before their main lunch – all in aid of charity and school council initiatives. Also loving the sound of their Eco Fashion Swap – a chance for pupils to get their hands on pre-loved items.

WRAP AROUND CARE

Useful hours if you’re a working parent. Breakfast club starts from 7.30am, and the pupils can stay until 6pm. After school clubs include anything from Book Club to Baking, and Mandarin to Fencing. The school has also partnered with FunFest to offer a brilliant holiday club throughout the year at Altrincham Prep School (just down the road) with more than 40 activities and themes including Mission Impossible, Lego Challenges, Crafty Creations and Beauty School.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

It’s a firm ‘no’ to mobile phones here. Some Y6 pupils walk to and from school and may bring a mobile phone or internet-enabled device (including smartwatches), but they must be handed into the office to pick up at the end of the day.

ISI REPORT

The most recent ISI inspection (November 2025) was highly positive, with all standards met and inspectors awarding the school a ‘significant strength’ for pupils’ self-esteem, self-knowledge and self-confidence – a distinction given to fewer than 10% of schools. The report praised the school’s balanced approach to academic and personal development, noting that pupils are happy, articulate and thrive in a supportive environment where they feel known and valued.

WORD ON THE GROUND

All overwhelmingly positive. Bowdon Prep has long had the reputation locally of being a slightly under-the-radar gem: small, nurturing and quietly academic without the hard-edged intensity some independent schools are known for. It’s particularly well regarded among families looking for a more balanced alternative.

The Y6 girls I spoke to talked of the school’s warmth and sense of community, and how much they were going to miss Bowdon Prep when they moved up to secondary school. And the recent move towards co-education and the partnership with Repton has also generated considerable local interest, positioning the school as one of the more intriguing prep-school evolutions happening in South Manchester right now.

FEES

For 2025–26, fees for Reception to Year 6 are £4,056 per term, plus optional lunch charges. Kindergarten fees are slightly lower and VAT exempt.

Not inexpensive, obviously, but broadly in line with comparable Manchester-area prep schools.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

GOOD FOR: Families wanting strong academic outcomes without an overly pressurised atmosphere, particularly children who will thrive in a smaller, nurturing environment.

NOT FOR: If you want razor-sharp academic pressure and relentless competition, there are arguably more intense options in the North West.
