The Manor House Hotel, Alsager

A swim-up bar, DJ sessions, wellness retreats and A-grade treatments. Discover why this ridiculously idyllic bolthole is one of the best spa hotels in the UK

Anywhere that curates mellow DJ sessions in a spa garden, where guests can wallow in a pool and paddle over to the swim-up bar, has got my vote. And that’s exactly what’s in store at the enduring cool Manor House Hotel on long, hot summer nights. But it’s not just during summer this hotel comes alive. Even in winter, robe-wearing guests potter around its sprawling English spa garden, dangling their legs in the sunken hot tub, popping into the Himalayan Salt Shed, and floating in the balmy pool before grabbing a hot drink from the bar. That’s before we’ve even mentioned the A-grade spa treatments on offer.

If you fancy a cheeky overnighter, step inside the main hotel in a spruced-up 17th-century farmhouse and you’ll discover its 50 rooms are cool, contemporary and just the sort of place you could hole up for a few days of proper R&R. Some come with four-poster beds, others are painted in pastel hues with botanical prints. Though all open to killer views of wildflower-speckled meadows.

As for culinary credentials, the characterful Stables Restaurant is a refined yet relaxed space where diners sit glowing and grinning (presumably after hours in the spa) and order globally-inspired plates crafted from local ingredients.

But it’s undoubtedly the spa where you’ll find the true magic of the place. Swinging day beds, a hydrotherapy tub, a 38C vitality pool, cold water plunges, a meditation chamber, those DJ nights and all manner of spa packages to pick from. There’s also an indoor pool, steam room and sauna and the team recently launched their first wellness retreat.
