<p>When Jay Rayner describes a restaurant&#8217;s interior, &#8216;like the cantina from the original Star Wars, only with added hummus’, you want to have a nosey. Fenix was unveiled last autumn by the same crew behind the shiny Asian success story, Tattu. A lavish, moodily-lit space where diners sit beneath stone archways, ordering ouzo and olives and plates of slow-cooked lamb, grilled octopus, and spicy feta dip. It&#8217;s pricey, it&#8217;s luxurious, but it&#8217;s also not just style over substance with a menu that&#8217;s making waves on the Manchester food scene for all the right reasons.</p>

<p>Beautiful doesn&#8217;t have to mean all glamour and opulence and bling bling bling. Take The Church Inn in Mobberley. A little bit wonky, a little bit imperfect, and an eternal favourite for locals and out-of-towners. They come, not just for the superb food. But for the blazing fires, the low-level lighting, the old-school, climber-draped facade, and the beer garden, ringed in smudges of wisteria. One of Muddy&#8217;s all-time faves. </p>

Well, the Refuge in the Kimpton Clocktower is just the place. In fact, it&#8217;s a date night, meeting spot, grab-a-load-of-friends-and-chatter-all-night kind of spot, whether you perch in the plant-filled Winter Garden, the cavernous bar with every spirit imaginable. Or in the Dining Room, all herringbone flooring, panelled ceiling, the iconic &#8216;the glamour of Manchester&#8217; artwork and globally-inspired plates. </p>

<p>Calling all glamourpusses. If you&#8217;re looking for a place that revels in swank, book ahead for a bling-filled night at Sexy Fish. Artfully prepared Asian plates are served to diners beneath shimmering neon lights and extraordinary murals across the ceiling &#8211; a sharp lesson in maximalism. And there&#8217;s a glittering swordfish sculpture by Damien Hirst.  Yes, it draws the haters and eye-rollers who moan about the prices and the posers and the snooty dress code (they really will turn you away if you&#8217;re not scrubbed up to their standards). But give yourself over to this joyously over-the-top restaurant and we promise you&#8217;ll have a cracking good night. </p>

<p>Crackling fires, cosy nooks and local gins might just be the holy grail for how to serve up a proper British pub. And the Cholmondeley Arms dishes up all three and more, where all walks of life can mingle and giggle and tuck into quality British cooking. Warm up your insta grid with snaps of the pint glasses hung above the bar, the exposed brick interiors, the leather armchairs besides roaring fires, and its unpretentious, clubby vibe. The &#8216;Chum&#8217; is absolutely what a classic boozer should be.</p>

<p>Thoughtful restoration and plenty of creativity went into the development of this characterful pub, found inside the repurposed grade-II listed Tenants’ Hall at Alderley Park. And this is a crew clearly on a mission to polish some of the county’s fallen drinking dens, with The Ship Inn at Styal and Bramhall’s Crown and Conspirator all under its very capable wings. For the best views, pull up a pew in the main dining room with its arched high ceilings, original windows, glowing pendants and heavy wooden fireplace whose mantel holds a collection of vases and glass knick knacks. </p>
