<p>Once upon a time, the Northern Quarter was a no-go zone: sex shops, crumbly warehouses, and grimy alleys haunted by slippery characters. This was Manchester’s underbelly, a place forgotten after the mills shut down and the war scars faded.</p>



<p>But then, in the chaos of the eighties and nineties, Madchester erupted like a middle finger to the establishment. Musicians, artists, and misfits crashed into this zone between Piccadilly and Victoria stations, igniting a subculture revolution that refused to be ignored.</p>



<p>Vinyl shops like Piccadilly Records, Vinyl Exchange, and Eastern Bloc Records popped up first. Then came record labels and designers, setting up shop in the tangled hive of Affleck’s Palace — a neon-soaked maze of tie-dye, baggy jeans, and underground dance anthems.</p>

Pop-up galleries, yoga nights, queer-friendly socials, freelance coworking — they’ve turned self-care into an art form. An HQ of brilliant positivity, it doubles as a community hub where you can sip, shop merch, and actually feel good doing absolutely nothing at all. I&#8217;m pretty sure you&#8217;ll stay a little longer than you planned.</p>

You can easily lose at least a couple of hours in here. </p>



<p>Back out in the fresh air, mooch on over to <a href="https://nordicmuse.com">Nordic Muse</a>, bringing a slice of Scandinavian cool to Manchester. Stacked with a curated edit of sleek, functional homewares, ceramics, and textiles — all embodying that signature minimalist aesthetic &#8211; it’s less about flashy trends and more about timeless craftsmanship. From cards and wall prints, to one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces, you&#8217;ll want to buy it all. </p>



<p>Housed in a striking Victorian building, <a href="https://www.craftanddesign.com">Manchester Craft and Design Centre</a> is a vibrant hub for creativity and craftsmanship. Home to a collective of independent artists and makers, it showcases cutting-edge ceramics, textiles, jewellery, and more &#8211; all rooted in thoughtful design and skilled technique. It’s the perfect spot to discover unique, handcrafted pieces that embody the city’s bold artistic spirit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eat">Eat</h2>



<p>Stomach rumbling? Nab a table at <a href="https://www.evelyns.co">Evelyn&#8217;s</a>, where laid-back cool meets European finesse. The space feels effortlessly curated, with bare brick walls, exposed steels, and an open kitchen filled with busy cooks conjuring plates nodding to French classics, all of which are driven by seasonal, local produce. From skate au poivre to steak with cafe de Paris sauce, it’s brunch and dinner reimagined &#8211; unpretentious, sharp, and deliriously tasty.</p>

If you&#8217;re bringing the kids, magnificently they have a hidden play area beneath the stairs. And don&#8217;t miss ordering the iconic tomato margarita (tomato vine tequila, mezcal, helios tomato, agave, acid blend, lime oil) from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stray.bar/">Stray</a> &#8211; the creative spot squirrelled away in a corner of the market. </p>



<p>Or there&#8217;s the sceny workspace-cum-café-cum-restaurant, <a href="https://duciestreet.com/food-and-drink/">Ducie Street Warehouse</a>, crowned with the NY-style Native hotel, and trading in classic dishes plucked from across Europe with extra frills. The idea is to order a few dishes and share with your fellow diners, where the focus is on big-hitting flavours that won’t break the bank. Or you could just go for one of their mammoth burgers or fluffy foccacia flatbreads as a reward for all those steps you&#8217;ve put in. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drink">Drink</h2>



<p>As the sun dips, the Northern Quarter morphs into a nocturnal playground. Grab a quick cocktail at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washhousemcr.com/#wash">The Washhouse</a>, a secretive speakeasy hidden behind a laundromat facade. </p>



<p>Then onwards for live music at <a href="https://bandonthewall.org">Band on the Wall </a>&#8211; a living monument to Manchester&#8217;s creative spirit. Housed in a restored Victorian building, its recent £3.5 million expansion now includes a larger main stage, a café-bar with a secondary performance space, and a full floor devoted to its World of Music learning programme. Expect eclectic global line‑ups &#8211; from jazz and folk to post‑punk and world music &#8211; plus historic gravitas (Björk, Joy Division, The Fall have all played early gigs here).</p>
