<p>National Trust pinewoods give way to rolling dunes and miles of open sand, with red squirrels darting in and around the trees if you&#8217;re patient (and quiet). The tide occasionally uncovers prehistoric footprints dating back to 8,000 BC, but really, the unbridled joy of this place is staring at the kids running up and down the dunes before digging for crabs, whilst you attempt to top up your tan. Wild, untamed, and with honey-coloured sand stretching far into the distance, Formby is undoubtedly one of prettiest beaches in this corner of the UK. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-west-kirby-wirral-nbsp">West Kirby, Wirral&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Closer to home, there&#8217;s always the Wirral when you don&#8217;t want to be stuck in the car for long. Smaller and quieter than its neighbours, this 300-metre curve of sand gazes across the Dee Estuary and you can catch the outline of North Wales brooding beyond, plus you&#8217;ll also find a marine lake next door for windsurfing, sailing and kayaking. Arrive at low tide and you can walk out to Hilbre Island, wading through the shallows — just check the tide tables first, since the causeway disappears fast.</p>

<p>Head to this under-the-radar gem with miles of creamy sand backed by dunes,  and the Point of Ayr lighthouse brooding offshore since 1776 for some cracking instagrammable views. Lay down your picnic blanket and gaze across the vast sandy expanse whilst the kids dawdle in the shallows or craft sandcastles. Plus, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lolaandsuggsbeachcafe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lola &amp; Suggs</a> does coffee right by the beach, and the surrounding Dee Estuary is a haven for birdwatchers if anyone in your party is a twitcher. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-borth-wen-rhoscolyn-anglesey-nbsp">Borth Wen, Rhoscolyn, Anglesey&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Beach-seekers always fall for this sheltered south-facing crescent on Holy Island. Tucked between rocky headlands that keep the wind off and the water calm, it&#8217;s always a popular for families with little ones paddling in the shallows and kayakers launching offshore. Pad along the creamy dunes and you&#8217;ll catch the wind whistling through the marram grasses, before hobbling over the rock pools at either end, dipping your toes in the glittering waters. The coastal path from here takes you round to Rhoscolyn Head, where there are sea arches and caves worth the detour. And there&#8217;s also the White Eagle pub for a large glass of rosé with sand between your toes when the day&#8217;s done.</p>

<p>A crescent of sand and shingle beneath a castle headland have made this beach something of an icon on the Llŷn Peninsula — and not it&#8217;s just any castle, but one built by Llywelyn the Great in the 1230s. The headland shelters the beach from westerly winds, making it calmer than most along this coast and reliably good for families. Plus there are rock pools at low tide, dolphins occasionally offshore, and Cadwalader&#8217;s ice cream has been made to a secret recipe here since 1927 &#8211; a non-negotiable when you spend the day here.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aberffraw-beach-anglesey-nbsp">Aberffraw Beach, Anglesey&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Craving something a little more wild and windswept? Look to this long, creamy curve of sand. Beach-goers haul their gear over their shoulders and pad half a mile from the village along the river bank to this wide, curving bay, with white sand between their toes, Snowdonia views, conservation-grade dunes and free parking — a combination that shouldn&#8217;t be this easy to find. At low tide, walk out to St Cwyfan&#8217;s Church — a 12th-century chapel that used to be attached to the mainland until the sea had other ideas.</p>

<p>For beach bragging rights, you&#8217;re going to want to seek out this beauty on the island&#8217;s southern tip, with three and a half miles of Blue Flag sand, backed by the Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest, where walkers scramble over marshes and stroll in the shadowy pine forest. Roll out your towel and if you squint into the distance, you&#8217;ll catch shimmering views of Snowdonia and Llyn Peninsula across the water. Nudge a little further to the bay&#8217;s northern tip and you&#8217;ll find the tidal island of Ynys&nbsp;Llanddwyn with its hidden coves, where high tide sweeps the sands up into the blue-green waters.  </p>

<p>Even during winter, this wild four-mile beach, yawning with sand the colour of caramel, is an enduringly atmospheric spot to linger. Here, the moody medieval fortress of Harlech Castle looms behind you, the Snowdonia mountains crop up through the clouds, and vast swathes of dunes (Wales&#8217;s only growing dune system and a National Nature Reserve) roll out away from the water. Leatherback turtles migrate to feed off jellyfish in these waters in summer, too, so you might be very lucky and spot one of these beauties. No lifeguards, so check conditions before swimming.</p>
