<p>There&#8217;s not a whiff of stuffiness or pomp to the place, yet the cooking is sophisticated and clever, where dishes are crafted with precision with all those smoky flavours you get from a Josper grill. There are a clutch of tables out the front, scooping up the sunshine. But the real ace card of this unpretentious pub is its gloriously atmospheric open-air dining space, Hide, where diners sit beneath a retractable roof. An absolute must for your foodie bucket list. </p>

<p>For something entirely different, head up high to the spruced up rooftop above Pepper Street car park &#8211; less of a beer garden, more a hip and playful rooftop terrace. Open all year round thanks to retractable roofs and plenty of blankets, Rooftop Social takes on a whole new aesthetic when the skies are beating down in blue. Sun-seekers can slide onto buzzing communal tables, ordering punchy tacos, oozy pizzas and Greek-style street food, all washed down with a wine or three. Plus there&#8217;s table tennis, curling, quizzes and more. Though gazing across the city spires with a cocktail in the sunshine takes a bit of beating.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s plenty of original charm inside this traditional tavern in the Peckferton Hills. Though on a sunny day, thirsty punters stop by here after marching along a strip of the Sandstone Trail, pulling up a pew on the sun trap terrace with achingly idyllic views of the Cheshire Plain and North Wales beyond. Even if you&#8217;re just making a pit-stop for a quick pint, it&#8217;s absolutely worth the trip. Though if you are hungry, you&#8217;ll find generous plates of in-season dishes, plucking the very best from its surrounds (fish from the trawlers in Lancashire, brie from Tarporely).</p>

<p>My tip? Wind up at this crooked countryside boozer after a dawdle through its surrounding fields and a paddle in the always-quiet Peover Eye, approaching it through the graveyard of St Oswald&#8217;s Church. It&#8217;s here you&#8217;ll find its enchanting entrance smothered in gnarled branches of wisteria. But walk to the right and you&#8217;ll find its sprawling garden out the back, filled with tables and tufts of lavender and wild grasses. It&#8217;s a gorgeous place to settle in for a long languid afternoon of chilled rose whilst the kids dart about the vast lawn. </p>

<p>Every time I find myself in Mottram St Andrew, I wonder why I don&#8217;t wind up here more often. Thatched cottages, characterful working farms and chocolate box hillsides make it a dreamy corner of bucolic loveliness. And an essential stop if you do find yourself here is this boozer tucked away on Wilmslow Road. The garden terrace may be bijou, but it&#8217;s one helluva spot when the sun&#8217;s out, the daffs are nodding and you need to put your feet up with hazy views of distant hills.</p>

<p>After a good old stomp around Delamere Forest (or even a revitalising swim or SUP at Wild Shore), make a beeline to this cosy, 18th-century drinking den on its fringes. Victorian tiles, vintage beer barrel stools, and lights made from old fishing reels ensure the interior is characterful and quirky. But outside, its terrace is a distinctly idyllic place to curl up for an afternoon away from the world.</p>

<p>Anybody who’s anybody who lives within a few miles of Mobberley knows about the village’s insanely good trio of pubs – all of which just happen to be run by the same people, The Cheshire Cat Pubs and Bars. But these are no ‘chain’ pubs as such, but pretty and characterful pubs all with their own distinct menus and settings and feel. But when the sun&#8217;s shining, <a href="http://thebullsheadpub.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bull’s Head</a>’s immaculate beer garden comes into its own, where punters in sunglasses huddle around the tables or settle inside the pods that popped up during COVID. It&#8217;s the sort of place you nip into for just one drink, but end up staying for hours… especially given the dodgy phone signal and the legendary steak pies on the menu. </p>
