<p>Sprucing up the rooftop of Pepper Street car park,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rooftopsocial.club/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rooftop Social Club</a>&nbsp;is Chester’s sky‑high playground. Two levels of social magic unfold under a retractable roof, with heated cabanas, chalets, and killer views. A handful of permanent kitchens take care of the food, including Death by Tacos, The Fat Greek, and Enzo’s Pizza. Add in games (cornhole, shuffleboard, table tennis), seasonal pop‑ups, and craft cocktails, and it’s your year‑round hangout to play, sip and eat. And for this winter, it&#8217;s transformed into Rooftop Apres Club with cosy igloos, heated cabanas, a brand spanking new winter bar and curling lanes.</p>

<p><a href="https://wineandwallop.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wallop</a>&nbsp;is a decidedly cosy and characterful place to hunker down on a cold winter’s evening for a glass or three of red and elevated pub food. Interiors are a blend of heritage charm and no‑fuss cool, where real ales and craft cocktails are served to guests lingering in the snug rooms or beside the bar. Plus there are open‑mic music nights and live sets to keep the crowds entertained. </p>

<p>For something low-key, mooch on over to Tarporley and into this <a href="https://littletaptarporley.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warm-toned bar </a>in a former butcher&#8217;s shop. Craft beer, imaginative small plates and an eclectic gin list take centre stage in a space that&#8217;s quietly cool and stylish. No naff cocktails or garish decorations in here, thank you very much. Just an all-smiles welcome from staff who really know how to whip up a stiff drink. And on one of Cheshire&#8217;s dreamiest high streets &#8211; which is ridiculously idyllic with Dickensian style decs and twinkly lights over Christmas.</p>

Once a Working Men’s conservative club, now a buzzing, two‑storey hub with high vaulted ceilings, whitewashed brick walls and a gleaming industrial interior that feels refreshingly Northern‑cool.&nbsp;The kitchen turns out everything from sushi and fresh seafood to chargrilled steaks and hearty Sunday roasts, while the bar rustles up sleek cocktails and a rich selection of craft beers (some brewed on-site at their own microbrewery).</p>

This diminutive, candle‑lit spot feels like a 1920s speakeasy reborn, where soft jazz on vinyl, flickering light, and cosy seating all combine.&nbsp;The drink list is nothing if not discerning: craft beers, malt whiskies, wines and cocktails sit side‑by‑side, all washed down with a resident pianist tinkling in the background or mellow jazz record on the decks — perfect for old‑school romance.</p>

For anyone (like me) who is clueless about shuffleboard, do not let that put you off. It&#8217;s the easiest game to learn, and as soon as you&#8217;ve mastered the art of whooshing along your pucks, you&#8217;ll find yourself totally won over. Add in bottomless cocktails, seasonal dishes (from oozy camembert to pigs in blankets), and a side of competitive chaos as you battle it out on neon-lit shuffleboard courts, and I promise you&#8217;ll be lolling the night away. </p>

Warm up with mulled wine, or the legendary Bombardino — a warm Italian mountain shot of rum, cream, and cinnamon topped with whipped cream. Though the laugh-out-loud joy of this festive hideaway undoubtedly comes from the ‘carol-oke’ hüttes, where punters belt out classics from a catalogue of 1,000 songs in private cabins. </p>

The team at this LA-style-hangout has nailed après-ski vibes in what can only be described as a festive party lodge, dishing up hot rum, alpine cocktails, German bratwurst and marshmallow fire pits. There are resident DJs, quiz nights, and FREE Christmas films on big screens, whilst singing competitions in karaoke huts keep the energy high. An unapologetically fun, slightly chaotic winter wonderland perfect for festive drinks with your fave people.</p>

<p>Now it&#8217;s Christmas, this cavernous, industrial-chic venue at Depot Mayfield has been given a festive glow-up with reams of twinkly lights, enchanting installations and a dreamy soundtrack. There are plenty of hideaway nooks to drink up a cocktail or three, plus fire pits for marshmallow roasting.&nbsp;And whatever you do, always order the pistachio and raspberry profiteroles from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.escapetofreightisland.com/food-and-drink/ornella's-little-kitchen" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ornella’s Kitchen</a>. I should’ve taken a photo, but I hoovered these bad boys up on my last visit. For a hit of Manchester cool in a hip and lively venue, you really can&#8217;t go wrong.</p>
