<p>On the lookout for something with charm and substance? Mosey on over to Malpas and to The Cholmondeley Arms &#8211; a Victorian schoolhouse turned pub with rooms. Old gables, aged brick, ornate timber, and interiors warmed by antiques bring the space to life, whilst roaring fires and serious food up the ante. Rooms are lovingly done, too. And on your doorstep? Miles of sprawling countryside for rosy-cheeked walks, the crumbly ramparts of <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/beeston-castle-and-woodland-park/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beeston Castle</a>, and feel-good mooches around Nantwich and <a href="https://cholmondeleycastle.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cholmondeley Castle Gardens</a>. </p>

<p>An elegant option for those who want village‑chic, with a dash of swagger. Rooms come with exposed beams, white‑washed walls and some have four‑poster beds and classic features. It’s polished without being precious, and the food lands well &#8211; gastro‑pub classics cooked with confidence. For an easy walk, pad down Bollin Grove and you’ll arrive at a section of the Bollin Valley Loop (the full route runs for 24 miles, all the way from Macclesfield into Partington), where the Bollin meets the Manchester Ship Canal. Nearby is National Trust-owned <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cheshire-greater-manchester/hare-hill" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hare Hill</a>, with its tended wooded garden and parkland. The dozing village of Mottram St Andrew sits 5 mins away by car, criss-crossed by dozens of walking trails, many of which end up at <a href="https://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/bullshead/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bull’s Head, Mottram</a> whose sun-trap terrace is always worth a quick pit-stop pint. </p>

<p>I can&#8217;t pull together a round-up of pubs with rooms and not mention The Roebuck: all candlelit tables, worn wood floors, and vintage French bistro touches. The six rooms upstairs are boutique in all the right ways, with deep roll-top baths, moody hues, and old-school radios to soundtrack your lie-in. It manages that tricky balance of being both romantic and maximalist, the kind of place where you can sip a negroni by the fire before sliding into a dish of braised beef. Mornings are slow here, in the best way &#8211; and you&#8217;re in Mobberley, which means miles of rural loveliness to explore. And a handful of epic pubs. </p>

<p>There’s something innately comforting about a proper village pub that’s been reborn without losing its soul &#8211; and The Lion nails it. Once a crumbling 16th-century coaching inn, now a masterclass in smart, country design, it offers sixteen bedrooms that range from cosy to full-blown statement. The standout? The Bakery Suite &#8211; a split-level love nest with soaring beams, soft textiles and a roll-top bath made for long soaks and late starts. Downstairs, the food is hearty but thoughtful: elevated pub classics that come with a side of seasonality and firelight. Fancy a long, reinvigorating walk? You’re close to the Sandstone Trail – a 34-mile route (which you can obviously tackle bit by bit) from the market town of Frodsham to Whitchurch. For a mooch around gardens, hotfoot it to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.historichouses.org/house/cholmondeley-castle-gardens/visit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cholmondeley Castle Gardens</a>, blooming with an arboretum, glades, water garden, rose garden and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Swan, with its 400-year history and gently eccentric vibe, is at the heart of Tarporley. Rooms are individually styled, each with a splash of colour or an antique chair that makes it feel curated rather than copied. Some sit above the old coaching inn, others are tucked away in the converted stables. <p>The  Bear is quietly transforming from local pub to destination stay. Upstairs, eight soon‑to‑open en‑suite rooms (viewing the Peckforton Hills) promise countryside luxury without the twee trappings. Expect richly­‑toned interiors, timber beams, and immaculate craftsmanship. Downstairs the bar and dining rooms are already delivering serious fare, where polished style meets genuine pub soul.</p>
