<p>The mothership of adventure playgrounds, <a href="https://bewilderwood.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BeWILDerwood</a> opened its second offshoot in Cheshire back in 2021 (the original is in Norfolk), and it&#8217;s just announced it&#8217;s unveiling a third in the Lake District later this year. The clever crew behind it know exactly how to conjure a dream outdoorsy day for kids with treetop trails, zip wires, den-building and storytelling thrown in throughout 70 acres of woodland nirvana. There&#8217;s something for every age: toddlers have sandy play zones, whilst teens tackle high ropes. And they often release cheap tickets over the school holidays. </p>

<p>If your brood has a head for heights, mosey on over to this legendary adventure park that&#8217;s become something of a rite of passage for Cheshire kids since opening in the 1990s. Sky-high rope bridges, stomach-dropping slides and obstacle courses designed to test even the bravest big kids are all there for the taking, and there&#8217;s more than 40 challenges to keep the kids busy, including the infamous Tarzan Swing. It&#8217;s heartwarmingly unpolished and anarchic &#8211; just make sure you bring a spare set of clothes for the kids. Getting filthy and taking risks are actively encouraged! </p>

<p>This glittering lake with an inflatable water park is brilliant fun during the summer months. But deep within a nearby tangle of forest is its adventure trail &#8211; an energy-busting woodland route with more than 50 obstacles, with balance beams, rope swings, zip wires and a whole lotta mud. It takes a good 2-3 hours to complete the entire thing. And if your kids are truly up for it, they can combine the trail with a dash around the Aquapark (combo tickets start from £37.50). I promise they&#8217;ll sleep very soundly after a day out here. </p>

<p>Now I can&#8217;t do any sort of outdoorsy round-up without mentioning this juggernaut forest, where walkers wander in the shadow of towering pines and sprawl out their picnic blanket in sun-dappled clearings. As for the kids? You&#8217;ll find proper forest school immersion with Go Ape&#8217;s junior treetop nets, mud kitchens galore, den-building zones and Gruffalo-themed orienteering trails. Kids can forage for sticks and balance on logs and, alongside their other play areas, the team are on the cusp of opening a brand-spanking new hillfort-themed play area (watch this space). Segways and bike hire add extra thrills for older ones. </p>

<p>If stately homes are your thing, beeline to Lyme Park, where you can combine the sweeping drives, magnificent home and formal gardens with a visit to Crow Wood play area. Here, little ones can totter along balance beans, scurry up net ropes, whizz down slides and hide away in secret dens. Handily, it&#8217;s also very close to the cafe for post-play ice creams. Don&#8217;t miss a walk towards The Cage either &#8211; for sprawling views across the moorland and towards Manchester. </p>

Let the kids burn energy on the adventure frames while you picnic under the trees, and there&#8217;s a gorgeous little train rattling through the woods and around the house. For an extra few pounds, there&#8217;s also adventure golf, pitch &#8216;n&#8217; putt and a high ropes course, too. </p>
