This independent, family-run brewery and distillery near Kelsall has been producing award-winning ales since 1992 and is also home to Cheshire&#8217;s first single malt whisky. Guided tours take visitors behind the scenes of the brewing process, from grain to glass, with plenty of opportunities to slurp along the way, before settling into the on-site taproom for a pint or three.</p>

<p>Open water swimming is very much back at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.manleymere.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Manley Mere</a>&nbsp;for the summer season – a serene lake that’s also set itself up as an aquatic centre. Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and windsurfing are all on the bill. And its thrilling inflatable aqua park is a superb option for dads who love a bit of aquatic action – where you can dive, slide and bounce around its obstacles. Oh, and of course you can swim here, too – away from the buzz of the aqua park for a proper revitalising dip.</p>

<p>Keen to get outside? Adventure-loving dads can take on the high ropes and zip wires at Go Ape, hire bikes to explore the forest trails or pootle along its shady woodland paths. It’s an easy, affordable day out with plenty of fresh-air appeal. After a good old stomp, make a beeline to the cosy, 18th-century drinking den, <a href="https://www.thefishpoolinn.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fishpool Inn</a>, on its fringes. Victorian tiles, vintage beer barrel stools, and lights made from old fishing reels ensure the interior is characterful and quirky. But outside, its terrace is a distinctly idyllic place to curl up for an afternoon away from the world.</p>

<p>Lace up your walking boots and head for the pretty village of Kettleshulme, where a gorge countryside walk ends with a top-notch lunch at <a href="https://www.swaninnkettleshulme.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Swan Inn</a>. </p>



<p>The term hidden gem gets bandied about a lot, but in this case, it’s bang on. On first glance, it’s pretty old school with seats lining the walls and beams propping up the ceiling. But the kitchen is far more sophisticated than you’d expect, where seafood takes precedence with starters of oysters, josper-grilled prawns and scallops. My advice? Go for the bouillabaisse main, it’s sensational. As for the walk? You’re super close to the fringes of Derbyshire, yet have all the bucolic loveliness of Cheshire too so you can’t go wrong. You could pick up the Gritstone Trail and follow it north to the resplendent Lyme Park. Or take the circular walk from the village where killer views can be found from Windgather Rocks and Pym Chair and trace paths towards the valley of the River Goyt.</p>
